On this page you will find links to detailed five day English plans which can be used in a Year 1, Year 2 or mixed Year 1/2 class.
You will also find more information on drama techniques.

Writing

Beginning a writing activity with a book means children are exposed to good quality texts before they begin to write themselves and reinforces how text can be organised on a page. It is also a starting point for children to create their own ideas and can help to increase their language.

At the back of each Dotters story is a list of writing activities that can be used alongside the book.

Using some of these ideas in more depth, here are some examples of an English plan using Molly McDrew An Adventure Around the World, Molly McDrew's Space Adventure and Molly McDrew and the Great Fire of London which can be used over five lessons. These are free for you to download and use (just signup to access). Please get in contact if you are looking for a specific type of planning for the children in your class, we'd be happy to help.

Drama

Using drama is also a great way to increase language and build confidence before children start to write anything at length themselves. Often young children can struggle to generate their own ideas when they write so drama helps increase their understanding of a topic, character or situation and encourages them to verbalise their ideas before they write.

There are many great drama techniques that can be used as a way to unlock ideas and ignite the imagination. At the back of our books you will see some drama activities that can be used alongside the book. Please follow the link for more information about these techniques and many more. https://dramaresource.com/drama-strategies/
